Lamplighter is a 4-minute western. It was made as a submission for the Hunt Showdown Video Awards. The brief was to create a 4-minute max film set in the world of the game Hunt Showdown, and to include music from the Port Sulphur Band. To conjure the swamps of the game I developed a script to shoot at night at the edge of a pond in the Mendip, using LEDs, gels, torchlight and an oil lamp to light the scenes.
The costume was hired from Bath Theatrical Costume Hire. I explained and showed them what I was looking for and they recommended garments.
To make the short more authentic to the game’s world I decided to harvest sounds from the game itself. This included gunshots, footsteps, and ambient sound. However, noises such as the creaking lamp, splashing water, match striking were recorded at my own home, using the sink for the water and my creaking water bottle for the lamp.
As well as foley, I shot all the footage on my phone and wrote the narrative voiceover, later recorded by Peter Beatty.
